Deaf since she was 18 months old, she is the youngest woman to win the Academy Award for Best Actress in a Leading Role, which she won at the age of 21 for Children of a Lesser God. She has also stated she is a proud member of the National Association of the Deaf. She portrayed a deaf lesbian on the TV show The L Word. Her work in television has resulted in two Golden Globe nominations and four Emmy nominations.
